This morning, the OFD had the privilege to partake in the send off of a true Ossining humanitarian. Retired Chief of Police Joseph Burton was brought to his final resting place and would take his final ride through the streets of the village he dedicated almost 50 years protecting & serving.

Some might have never had the privilege of meeting or knowing Chief Burton, or to many “Coach Burton”. From being Ossining’s longest serving Chief of Police of 24 years, a Coach to many Sports at Ossining High School for more than 40 years, a past President of the Ossining Historical Society, a member of the Ossining Elks Lodge, the American Legion, and a Chairman of the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps Board. The amount of members of our community he touched, knew, coached, helped, & served are endless.

His dedication to duty and his country began prior to his law enforcement career as he joined the US Army in 1963. He would serve until 1966. The OFD had the honor of our Ladder Trucks flying our Nation’s Colors as the procession passed under it prior to entering St. Augustine’s Cemetery.

We again extended our sincere condolences to the Family & Friends of Chief Burton, we also commend the Ossining Police Department along with the many other law enforcement agencies that took part in and for the planning & logistics of today.

Rest in Peace Chief….
