Today marks the “Birthday” of Engine 100. On this day in 1900, Holla Hose Company #5 was founded on the South End of Ossining. Many wonder and ask, what’s with the name? The name “Holla Hose” came from its founder, J. Edward Holla. The residents on South End of the village felt they had inadequate fire protection. J. Edward Holla, who was also a Village President (Mayor) was the driving force & founder of the company. They remain on the South End today, first due to infamous Sing Sing Prison. This well known landmark (and maximum security prison) has been debuted in many documentaries, films, etc. If you’ve never heard of it but ever heard the term “Being Sent up the River”, that refers to good ole Sing Sing. The facility itself predates the company, being constructed in 1824. The company currently operates a 2022 Pierce Enforcer Pumper. In our fleet, it is very recognizable with their now signature black over red colors. This first came to be on their previous engine (the 2001 American LaFrance). When it was delivered, it affectionately was known by many as the “Boar’s Head Truck”. The Officers & Members of the OFD congratulates Holla Hose on their 125th year of service. |
