| Along with the current 3 members in the Westchester County Firefighter 1 Class, we have another member that passed his IFO (Interior Firefighting Operations) test. Firefighter Brayden Hill of Engine 101 (Independent Hose Co. #6) passed his IFO test this past Saturday. Brayden joined the OFD in March of last year after moving to the area, he was previously a member of the West Elmira Fire Department in upstate New York. He began as a member of the Junior Corps at the age of 15, he then transitioned to general membership when he was of age. After moving to Ossining he decided to join the OFD.
Brayden had already completed the 1st part of FF1 (BEFO, Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations) prior to joining the Department. With a class opening up in Putnam County that fit his schedule, he was able to complete the curriculum fully and is now an NYS Interior Member. Firefighter 1 as a whole is 128 hours of instruction, irs broken down into BEFO: 79 Hours & IFO: 49 Hours, 128 hours of commitment. Currently he is now currently taking the last part of required training to fulfill his FF1 completion which is Firefighter Survival.
This class concentrates on the self-rescuing of the Firefighter. The course enables the firefighter to recognize fire ground conditions that contribute to firefighter disorientation and/or entrapment. It gives them the knowledge of what is necessary to ensure their safety and that of their partners or crew members, and if necessary call a MAY-DAY & and perform self-rescue techniques when disoriented or separated. It also covers when it’s necessary in needing to exit a structure in an emergency. The course length is 12-hours long and all forms of self removal from an IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) environment is reviewed and performed.
Brayden is 20 years old and again resides in the village with family ties to the OFD. He is currently a Pet Trainer for Pet Smart. He joined the Fire Service originally when he was a Junior Member to give back and follow in the footsteps of his family members that were FD members. When he moved to Ossining, he was able to do so in the same place where his Grandfather & Uncle had served. We congratulate him in completing Firefighter 1, another member able to further protect the lives and property of our community. |
